King Abdullah was born 1 August 1924 in Riyadh, and brought up under his father King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud, Founder of the modern third Saudi Kingdom.
Prince Abdullah developed a profound respect for religion and was
influenced by his father. So, he started his early life with a sense of
responsibility towards his nation and citizens. Prince Abdullah bin
Abdulaziz benefited from the experience of his father in the fields of
governance, politics, administration and leadership.
King Abdullah received his education at the hands of some teachers
and Ulama’. His education was Islamic, which was called “Kuttab”, Ulama’
lessons, Mosque courses and other schools. His highness was influenced
by the personality of his teachers the Ulama’, Thinkers and Sheikhs who
helped in developing his readiness by instructions and education.
Prince Abdullah has wide readings in many aspects of knowledge,
culture and civilization. Through these readings, he gained knowledge in
many cultural, political and economic fields. He regularly met with
Ulama “scholars” in order to exchange views with them. He meets with
Saudi citizens in every ceremony to review their circumstances, needs
and problems.
In 1384H-1964, Prince Abdullah was selected by King Faisal bin Abdulaziz
to command the National Guard, which comprises descendents of
Mujahedeen who served King Abdulaziz and contributed to building the
modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, especially in unifying the Kingdom. The
National Guard also includes sons of Bedouin who inherited the military
courage from one generation to another because of the nature of their
life that goes deep in the history of the Arabian Peninsula.
The nomination of Prince Abdullah as a Commander of the National
Guard was in harmony with his extensive experience of Bedouin and tribes
affairs and with his nature as a knight who was raised, since his early
childhood on all genuine Arabian Peninsula.
The selection of his Highness to assume the responsibility of this
modernized military institution was a considerable turning point. Within
a few years, his Highness expressed his natural command talents.
He proved a remarkable ability in developing the National Guard into a
military, cultural and social institution. He reshaped the National
Guard in accordance with the modern military styles and established
military and technical schools to train the National Guard members. He
also found the military school which later became King Khalid Military
Academy.
In addition, he built military compounds with hospitals for the
National Guard staff and developed the field hospitals. He has always
been the close leader to his men; he followed up their needs in terms of
training and welfare, so that they could be able to meet their national
duty.
While maintaining leadership of the National Guard, He was appointed
Second Deputy Prime Minister in 1975 when Prince Khalid became King.
When Prince Fahd came to the throne in 1982, he was named Crown Prince
and First Deputy Prime Minister on Sunday 21st Sha’ban 1402H ” June 13th
1982″.
He has invaluable experience not only in dealing with the internal
affairs of the Kingdom, but also in the role he has been playing on the
wide arena of international affairs. He has deeply rooted friendship
with most of world leaders.
The policy of Saudi Arabia
aims at supporting Arab and Islamic solidarity and reinforcing existing
fraternal bonds between Arab States within the framework of the Arab
League. Furthermore, it aims at reinforcing solidarity bonds between
Islamic States and their people within the framework of Islamic
Conference Organization. In this context, His Majesty visited Arab and
Islamic States and attended a number of conferences.
The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a great position in the United
Nations, and in the nonaligned nations and other International
Organizations. The Kingdom has also an effective role in money affairs
between south and north countries. In this context, Prince Abdullah
assumed his responsibilities and visited many countries in the world.
King Abdullah was very keen to link modernity with old traditions as
well as to find out profound links between the past and the present. So,
he established an annual cultural festival (Janaderiah), which is
attended by authors and intellectuals from the Arab World and else
where.
King Abdullah has great interest in horsemanship. He founded the
Equestrian Club in Riyadh to encourage this genuine kind of sports. He
has long hands in good deeds, human benevolence and in helping
scientists and scholars. So, he has established King Abdulaziz Library
in Casablanca, Morocco and King Abdulaziz Library in Riyadh.
