Santiago (Santi) Cazorla Gonzalez plays for Arsenal FC and the national team of Spain on a position of a midfielder.
Santi spent the start of his career at Oviedo. When he was 17 years old he played for Villarreal B and made his first appearance in November of 2003 having played against Deportivo only one closing minute of that game.
In the season 2004/05 Cazorla maintained his status of a main squad player and in 2005 he made his debut in the Champions League.
Having spent 54 games and scored 2 goals for Villarreal during three seasons Santi made a decision to move to Recreativo. In the summer of 2006 Cazorla signed a 4-year contract. His first game for the new team was against Mallorca on August 27. Through the season midfielder delivered a wonderful play and by the end of the season he was awarded the Spanish footballer of the year according to Don Balón however his team managed to take only 8th position in the Primera.
Villarreal expressed their wish to get the player back to the ‘yellow submarine’ and Cazorla did return to Villarreal according to a special option provided by the contract. During his first season after rejoining the squad he helped them take the second position on the league table – the highest position in Villarreal’s history. Cazorla scored 5 times and made a great number of assists that season. During the next three campaigns he went through a series of curious events. In 2008 Cazorla denied Real Madrid who wanted to buy the player and then he suffered a series of injuries that left him out of play for quite a long period. Only when he was through with all those things he managed to recover right before the beginning of the season 2010/11. All in all the Spaniard spent 127 games with 23 goals for Villarreal.
In 2011 Cazorla escaped from the sinking ‘yellow submarine’ to Málaga. The Andalusian side paid the generous €21 million for the midfielder and Santi paid back making 38 appearances with 9 goals helping his side take the 4th position in the championship that permitted to qualify for the Champions League through the knock-out stage. Villarreal themselves were relegated to the Segunda division in the season 2011/12.
In August of 2012 Málaga experienced certain financial crisis and decided to sell some of their players. One of those was Santi Cazorla who joined Arsenal FC on an estimated £15 million fee + bonuses in spite of the initial price tag of £32 million.
Cazorla has quite an extensive international career. He has played 45 games with 6 goals for the national team participating in 2 big tournaments, the European Championship of 2008 and 2012. In the latter Santi made only 2 appearances as he came in as a substitute in games against Ireland and France eventually winning that tournament.
